In other words: A visit to Groningen is well worth the effort. In the “What’s on in Groningen” section, we offer you a number of suggestions for an unforgettable weekend away.

What’s on in the City of Groningen and the surrounding area (Ommelanden)
Lots of great things to do in Groningen. Less than 20 kilometres away you’ll find the beautiful city of Groningen. It’s bursting with culture, sights and excellent restaurants. There’s great shopping or the chance to sit down with a drink on one of the many terraces. The charming shopping streets of Winschoten, the city of roses, are not to be missed. Marvel at the hanging kitchens of Appingedam. People wanted to extend their houses but the only way they could manage this was to build kitchens outside their homes. Hanging and floating above the narrow canals, they look as though they could fall into the water any minute. Luckily it’s just an illusion.
day trip to the German Wadden island of Borkum
Certainly not to be missed is a day trip to the German Wadden island of Borkum. After a boat crossing of around 45 minutes, you arrive in surrounding that evoke a delightful holiday feeling. The German island of Borkum is the westernmost and largest of the East Frisian Wadden islands.

Are you a history fan?
History enthusiasts are well catered for in Nieuweschans, Oudeschans and the walled town of Bourtange. When you walk through Bourtange, you feel as though you have gone back 250 years in time. At the widely known Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Pieterburen, you can learn all about seals and the seal population in the Wadden Sea. The cycling waypoints in the Oldambt lead you through the nicest parts of the ‘grain republic’ and past some impressive manor farms.
Groningen is famous for its manors, estates and castles. The closest to the hotel is Fraeylemaborg Manor in Slochteren. It is well worth a visit.
